Fuller Theological Seminary

Joanna Maxon is a resident of Hurst, TX and is a wife and mother. She is a Christian and a part of the United Methodist Church. She identifies as pansexual.

She attended Fuller Theological Seminary from March 2015 until October 2018, with the plan of obtaining a Master of Arts in Theology degreeto learn more about her faith and to advance her career. In 2018 she was expelled after she married a woman. A staff member in the administration had learned about her marriage to a woman via a tax return filing and reported it to the administration, citing it as a violation of Fuller’s “Community Standards.” Joanna was five classes short of earning her degree after three years of hard work.

“I was devastated,” she said. “I felt betrayed by Fuller's actions. I thought the community had welcomed me. I expected at the veiy least to be treated with more respect and kindness than they showed me. I am participating in this case because I do not want anyone else to be injured in the way I have been. I want to make whatever difference I can for those behind me.”

She is raising her voice to protect all LGBTQ+ students at Fuller Theological Seminary and religiously affiliated colleges across the country.
